Golden Ticket

This year is my golden year, I turn 29 on the 29th of June. I decided to make this year special and truly meaningful to me. After all, this is the beginning of a turning point. I’m not just 29 on the 29th, but I am entering the last 365 days of my 20’s. Normally every year for my birthday I buy myself something nice and expensive. What can I say? A girl likes to spoil herself! As I was thinking to myself what gift I was going to purchase, I couldn’t help but begin to reflect over the past 28 years of my life. One particular story came to mind and it was planning my first trip out the country. While in undergrad, I decided to take advantage of a class that would allow me to travel abroad at the end of the semester. I eagerly registered for the course and was super excited for the journey as I had never traveled outside the U.S before. Well, as time passed and the travel date grew closer I still didn’t have my passport. The daily struggle of a college student started to kick in and the procrastination was in full affect. Not to mention, I was dead broke and currently pledging to become a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. My sorority sister and I shared the class together and little did I know she would become my saving grace! The clock was ticking as the trip was approaching and I still didn’t have a passport. She eventually dragged me down to the passport office because she wanted to make sure I didn’t miss the trip. Our funds were extremely low and to make things worse, we left the passport office to find a yellow piece of paper waving off the windshield. Yep. We got a ticket.

I write this to thank my line sister, Falyn. If she didn’t make me get the passport I wouldn’t have took my first trip out the country. That’s when my special idea came to me on how I was going to honor my golden year with a true meaning. I decided I was going to do a wanderlust passport giveaway!

Traveling is an invaluable experience of life that I believe should come as a standard to all. However, I’ve found most people don’t travel because they don’t have the means to obtain a passport. It may sound backwards, but taking the first step seems to be the hardest part for most people.
